The Transfiguration Seniors, a group consisting of 135 members, was established on December 15, 1983, by Fr. James E Reilly to encourage socialization among senior citizens residing in and around Tarrytown.  Each year, the seniors host a communion breakfast in Fr. Reilly’s memory as a tribute to his vision and concern for the Transfiguration Seniors.    The current president of the Transfiguration Seniors, Joseph Balthazard, indicated the organization serves its membership “through caring and sharing.”

The Transfiguration Seniors meet twice a month for the purpose of enjoying the companionship of others, as well as enhancing their lives.  The bi-monthly meetings offer members the opportunity to interact with a large group of people, as well as having the option of traveling to various places that would be difficult to visit alone.  Each year the seniors have a number of “in-house” luncheons on special holidays such as St. Patrick’s and Columbus Day.  During the Thanksgiving holiday season, the seniors take this opportunity to celebrate 50th wedding anniversaries as well as 80th birthdays.  Also, the group arranges for two social breakfasts each year, in which the members are treated by the seniors at a local diner.

Most notably, every December Westchester County accepts nominations from senior clubs around the county to be inducted into the seniors “hall of fame.”  In order to qualify for this honor, senior must have demonstrated substantial community service.  Since the inception of the Transfiguration Seniors in 1983, the group is extremely proud that six of its members have been inducted into the county “hall of fame.”

John Piazza has been characterized as one of the stalwarts of this organization.  John, a charter member of the organization, was also past president and program coordinator. He has given an immense amount of time and energy to this program, which has contributed substantially to the organizations success.

The Transfiguration Seniors accept membership applications from person 55 years of

age or older, who are registered members of Transfiguration Parish or Tarrytown residents.  Those individuals or couples deciding to enroll in this organization with a positive attitude that reflects the “caring and sharing” values of the group will indeed reap their own rewards.  The annual dues for membership are $10.00.

The Transfiguration Seniors often attend a number of local performing arts theatres in Westchester County, in addition to taking advantage of Broadway.  Also, the seniors offer an annual golf outing in the Catskills, which normally consist of a 5-day, 4-night trip.  The seniors take advantage of day trips to New York City or other attractions in the county, as well as occasionally offering multiple day trips to neighboring states or Canada.  All of these trips and activities are arranged by “Transfiguration Seniors Program Coordinators,” who publish the details of these activities in the weekly Transfiguration Church bulletin.  If additional space is available on the trip, members are encouraged to invite guests to participate in any of these activities.

At the bi-monthly senior meetings, the seniors often arrange for guest speakers or invite a visiting nurse from Westchester County to monitor blood pressure levels.  Most meetings also include refreshments and the opportunity to play Bingo.

As part of the Transfiguration Seniors, a “craft group” has been organized, which promotes craft activities among its members such as knitting, sewing, crocheting and quilting.  The craft group meets bi-monthly for the purpose of preparing hand-made items that are sold at the Christmas Boutique each year.  The funds earned help to support the Transfiguration Seniors and their activities.
